Love Your Old Building with Heritage Builder Kevin Woods

When

Sat, 19 March 2022. 10am-4pm

Description

Find out how your house or barn was built and how best to take care of it, and potentially save yourself thousands of pounds in the process!

Do you own a historic building, or are you thinking of buying one? Did you know that repairs using hard cements and gypsum plasters can make problems worse, rather than better?

In this course, Heritage builder Kevin Woods will explain what kinds of problems can arise in old buildings and which techniques are suitable to repair them. Kevin will use a mixture of case studies from his own work and demonstrate some practical examples in The Folly’s garden.

The course will cover lime plasters, lime pointing and lime render. We will discuss their pros and cons, how they were used historically and how they can be used to preserve and repair buildings today. Kevin will also demonstrate traditional walling techniques and lime mortar mixing. The use of traditional lime mixes ensures an old building’s breathability and is more environmentally friendly than modern methods.

Kevin will also discuss what to look for when choosing your own professional builder for a heritage project. What kinds of questions should you ask? How should you assess their heritage credentials?

Questions for Kevin or requests to cover specific problems can be submitted in advance to info@ncbpt.org.uk.

Teas, coffees and lunch will be provided.

Please contact us to discuss any specific dietary requirements- we will provide for you if we possibly can.
