The Hall

The main reception room of lawyer Richard Preston’s 1670s townhouse was designed to impress. With its moulded beams, monumental fireplace (said to be one of the grandest in the Yorkshire Dales), and its great staircase with barley twist balusters, the Hall still gives today’s visitors a sense of the effect that Preston wanted to achieve. Although a fire in 1900 destroyed most of the wainscotting in the house, the panelling that survives here evokes a fashionable interior of the late 17th century.
