Spoon Carving Workshop

When

Sat, 30 September 2023. 10:30am-3:30pm

Description

Learn new craft skills and go home with your own hand-carved cooking spoon!

This taster session is a perfect introduction to the absorbing traditional craft of carving spoons from green wood using simple tools.

Starting with an axed-out spoon blank from green wood you will learn safe carving grips which will enable you to shape the spoon handle and bowl using a straight wood carving knife. You will learn how to work with the grain of the wood to get smooth carved surfaces.

You will then learn how to use a curved hook knife to hollow out the bowl of your cooking spoon and how you can finish and oil your spoon once it has dried.

All tools and materials are provided and no prior experience is necessary.

Workshop leader Mike Craig is a green woodworker with over 20 years experience as an educator in countryside management and wildlife conservation and a self-proclaimed total tree geek. Mike says “The only thing I enjoy more than carving green wood in a woodland setting is helping others to discover and develop their own woodland craft skills.”

Your ticket price includes all materials, tea or coffee when you arrive and a buffet lunch from our award-winning Coffee House. We can cater for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options and other requirements- please contact us to discuss anything you need.

The workshop will take place outside in The Folly’s garden, so please wear appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. In the event of bad weather, the workshop will be moved inside.
